ARTIFICE 004 returns with our fourth run of exhibitions and performances, introducing 6 ARTIFACTS for BLACKBOX and 6 ARTIFACTS for WHITEBOX at La MaMa Galleria and CultureHub in the Bowery.

[IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AND MY EARS ARE BLEEDING AND MY EYES ARE BURNING AND MY MOUTH IS FALLING OUT] came about from conversations surrounding the ephemerality of art and performance.

Inspired by the works of Lucian Freud, Zdzislaw Beksinski, and the aesthetics of liminal suburbia, we started thinking about how to capture a single moment of extreme tension and draw it out over the period of a show

[EX UTERO] isn’t your typical exhibition where everything sits still.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where life mutates beyond biological origins and inherited forms, six ARTIFACTS—ranging from interactive installations and VR to audiovisual performances and screenings—act as portals into this unraveling reality.

Structured along a timeline, each work unfolds in sequence. Depending on when you enter the space, you might encounter entirely different ways of being and worlds in the midst of becoming.

Our third chapter was held at a production site under Chemistry Creative in East Williamsburg, along with performance production team HUB and White Box fashion curator Heavensgate.

Starting out with White Box programming, artists include Zhimeng Liu, Evanna Chiu, Aguirre, Nostylguh, Jobi. In addition, we had our culture lounge curated by Discipline with presenting artists; Edie Xu, Zaozao Zhang, Dong, Deng.

Transitioning into Black Box with visuals provided by Fanrui Sun, William Willsey, Dirk Koy, Kat Sun, Sarah Ann Banks, Maximilian Prag. Performance by Bobi and Fliko. Main performance by Kevin Peter He with performer Petal Supply and closing set performance by Derek Chan, Robert Ruth, and Yilin Zhang with performer Antide.

WHITEBOX 003 invited audiences to rethink fashion as more than aesthetic or trend, but as a language for memory, resistance, and transformation.

Each designer used the body as a site of storytelling—blending tradition, identity, and digital craft to expand how we experience and understand what we wear.

BLACKBOX 003 explored the shifting boundaries between the real and the virtual, positioning the screen not as a surface, but as a portal into memory, identity, and embodied emotion.

From hyperpop performances and drone interventions to animated diaries and XR films, the works challenged audiences to reconsider how digital media shapes presence, selfhood, and the language of performance in contemporary culture.

DEUS, SEX, MACHINA is a response to the subject matter of deity, sex, and the machine. “Deus, Sex, Machina. Introducing 18 artists who will explore the fields of generative and real time media, installation, sculpture, and photography to the White Box (material media) showcase, along with the Black Box (digital media) showcase which both Boxes will be displayed at the same venue in Bushwick @selva_nyc

WHITEBOX 002 unfolded as a material response to the theme Deus Sex Machina, exploring how bodies, machines, and myth intersect in physical form.

The works presented speculative objects, reactive systems, and reconfigured domestic materials—offering reflections on care, memory, and embodied transformation.

From thermal-printed talismans to bio-responsive sculptures and ritual textiles, the exhibition framed technology not as cold utility, but as an emotional and cultural interface shaped by intimacy, history, and touch.

BLACKBOX 002 brought together works that reflect on perception, memory, and the construction of meaning in mediated environments.

Through altered archives, dreamlike animation, and speculative landscapes, the artists explored emotional distance, cultural fragmentation, and personal transformation.

Each piece offered a distinct response to systems of belief—scientific, spiritual, or social—and invited viewers to question how narratives are shaped, internalized, or undone. Rather than offering resolution, the program lingered in uncertainty, tracing the soft boundaries between sensation, story, and self.

We had kicked off our first chapter in the early Winter of 2024 with Black Box, showcasing 10 artists; Bobi, Viola, Don Hanson, Kat (ThePoetEngineer), Sobe Okoye, Bri Griffin (Muein), TIm Cox. Subsequently, had our month-long White Box popup, showcasing 6 artists and a couple vendors.

BLACKBOX 001 marked the launch of Artifice’s digital label with a constellation of artists working at the intersection of sound, design, and technology.

The showcase featured modular soundscapes, live-coded performance, generative 3D environments, and phygital fashion. From Tim Cox’s sacred-mechanical synth compositions to Muein and Sobe, Viola and Bobi’s audiovisual, and Harriet Davey’s glistening post-human avatars, the program explored how artists shape narratives through electronic and virtual media.

Together, these works formed a blueprint for BLACKBOX as a space of aesthetic experimentation and embodied digital presence.

WhiteBox 001 is an artist/vendor showcase exploring natural elements, digital ubiquity, and unconventional realizations of contemporary life.

WhiteBox 001 will house physical offerings spanning across textile, ceramic, and capsule work. Work from vendors will span across crochet, paper, and clothing mediums.

WhiteBox 001 is a product of Artifice, a new media network, and is engineered by Living Skin a hybrid gallery/library seeking to uncover the life in knowledge and art.
